On October 22nd, Fortune Avenue facilitated a workshop for a brand new audience: middle school students! More than 15 students from three different middle schools attended the session, which was hosted by the Cormier Youth Center in Andover, Massachusetts.
Our workshop, “Robux Riches,” introduced students to the budgeting basics through an engaging simulation based on the video game, Roblox. Students first learned about key budgeting categories such as clothing, health, housing, entertainment, and saving. After understanding that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to budgeting, and that everyone’s financial priorities may look a little different, students jumped right into a simulation.
During the simulation, each student started with 10,000 Robux and traveled through various stations focusing on housing, entertainment, avatars, and power-ups. As they made financial decisions and managed their virtual budgets, students gained hands-on knowledge about informed decision-making. Students even got to simulate how their money would grow in a mutual fund as opposed to a traditional bank account by spinning a wheel to see how changes in the market could affect their results.
The session concluded with a discussion where students shared what they learned. Many discovered that riskier decisions don’t always lead to greater rewards, while others saw how early investments could have long-term benefits. Multiple students brought up how personalized their budgets became, and how that is a reflection of budgeting in real life.
Overall, the workshop was a great success and we are excited to continue expanding our reach to younger audiences. We look forward to hosting more programs and working with more youth organizations to make financial literacy both accessible and engaging. If you would like to work with us to bring financial education to your audience, don’t hesitate to reach out!
