The first Fortune Avenue meeting at Boston Latin School was a great success, bringing together 22 high school students eager to learn more about financial literacy. We were also joined by three exceptional mentors from Boston University and Northeastern University, each demonstrating strong knowledge and enthusiasm for the topic.
The session focused on Week 1’s theme: The Basics of Budgeting, covering essential topics such as the 50/20/30 rule, budgeting apps, types of loans, and credit scores. The mentors guided students through discussions that encouraged thoughtful reflection on spending habits and financial priorities.
To reinforce these lessons, students participated in a hands-on budgeting challenge where teams imagined themselves as professionals with a set income and had to make strategic decisions among appealing but costly options. This engaging activity helped students apply budgeting principles in a realistic and competitive way.
The meeting wrapped up with pizza, wings, and subs, creating a fun and welcoming environment for everyone. Overall, the event struck a great balance between education and enjoyment, setting a strong tone for the rest of the Fortune Avenue program.
