Week 4 Recap: Workshops, Tours, and City Events!!

It’s been a wonderful Week 4 for our interns! Here’s a look of what they've been up to:

College Campus Tours 

Fortune Avenue attended tours of MIT and Boston University. During these tours, interns explored how two of the most rigorous schools in Massachusetts operate and learned about school culture, student life, and the campus. Not only did they explore the campus, but they learned about BU’s Questrom School of Business (specifically about the finance opportunities offered there), the study-abroad programs, research opportunities, and the various student organizations and clubs. 

Budgeting Workshop

Fortune Avenue held a budgeting workshop for students in the Boston Student Advisory Council (BSAC): a group of students who work to advise the local government and ensure that youth voices are heard. To kick off the workshop, Fortune Avenue presented tips on investing and budgeting. Then, the participants had a chance to apply their knowledge by using Investopedia to simulate buying, selling, and trading stocks. By the end of the workshop, participants learned the difference between wants and needs, how to set money aside, what a stock is, what stocks to invest in, why it matters to invest early, and how loans interest work. Participants loved the workshop, earning the workshop an average overall rating of 4.6 out of 5. 

Project Development

Our interns continued their several ongoing projects. These projects include updating the website, curriculum development, and brainstorming the logistics for a community basketball tournament. The interns are actively working on a financial literacy workshop and week-long intensive at Boston Public Library.

Community Building

Fortune Avenue was invited to the launch of Boston's 2nd Annual Youth Climate Fund by the Office of Youth Employment. At this event, our interns went kayaking and met Mayor Wu, State Senator Lydia Edwards, and the Green New Deal Director, Oliver Sellers-Garcia. Through this fund, Boston youth are given grants to design and develop solutions to the rising climate change issue. The fund encourages youth while delivering projects that help the city reach the goals of climate justice and community empowerment. The Fortune Avenue interns who attended this event were given a chance to see the opportunities, support, and networking experiences offered to young people
