On Wednesday, July 23rd, Fortune Avenue hosted the second workshop of our summer program—this time diving into the world of investing.
We kicked things off with an icebreaker that got students moving around the room. Four corners were labeled with Apple, Tesla, Chipotle, and Nike, and students had to choose which company they would invest in and why. The discussion sparked early debates about brand loyalty, innovation, and future growth.
From there, we shifted into an investing fundamentals mini-lesson. Students learned what it really means to “invest” and explored the major asset types: stocks, bonds, ETFs, mutual funds, and index funds. We also introduced core concepts like dividends, diversification, and valuation metrics. To make it concrete, we pulled up a live stock quote and walked through how to read details such as price, market cap, P/E ratio, dividend yield, 52-week range, and even recent news.
Finally, we onboarded students to the Fortune Avenue Stock Simulator Challenge, hosted on Investopedia. Originally designed as a team activity, the competition has now shifted to an individual format. Over the coming weeks, students will build and manage their own $10,000 virtual portfolios. At the program’s conclusion, the top five portfolios will take home a share of our $100 prize pool—judged not just on returns, but also on their investing strategy.
This session blended interactive discussion, hands-on practice, and a real-world challenge, helping students see that investing isn’t just for Wall Street—it’s a skill they can start building now.
